Then he tried to pull out, and couldn't.

There's a Latin name for it. Penis captivus. The textbook calls it rare. The textbook never worked a night out here.

A three-act nerve game.

I — Keep him in. Tap on the beat. Stay in rhythm, hold your grip, and catch him every time he tries to pull free.

II — Ease him loose. He's stuck now, and panicking. Hold to work him free while the strain climbs — and let go the instant he yanks, or you'll tear.

III — Let it go. The fight goes out of him and it all comes out: the car, the engraved lighter, the wife who had it made, the booster seat he never took out. He asks your real name. He doesn't get it. Then the whole absurd picture arrives at once — and you laugh.
